Asher Brown Durand

1796—1886. While best known as one of the leading figures of the Hudson River School of landscape painting, this New Jersey native began his career as an engraver. Durand’s 1820 engraving of the Declaration of Independence still is considered the paragon by which all others are judged. Durand helped found the National Academy of Design.
