Canaletto 1697-1768
The most famous landscape painter of the 18th Century began his career by painting theatrical backdrops. By the 1820s his large-scale vistas of the canals of his native Venice had caught the eye of collectors, leading to a long and fruitful career painting both Venetian scenes and English country landscapes.
