A native of Danville, Virginia, John received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1969. He embarked upon a successful career in commercial art before deciding in 1979 to follow the calling he first sensed as a child.
Through donation of print copyrights, he has helped to raise over half a million dollars in support of organizations such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The Nature Conservancy, and the Calvert Marine Museum. He is a charter member of the American Society of Marine Artists.
Barber often can be found cruising the Bay, on her quiet backwaters, aboard his floating studio, Albatross, a thirty-two-foot Grand Bands trawler.
